The Three Major Threats to RO Membranes
- Chemical Attack (Chlorine): Oxidizing agents, primarily free chlorine, chemically degrade the membrane material, causing irreversible damage and loss of salt rejection.
- Particulate Fouling: Suspended solids, silt, and colloidal matter accumulate on the membrane surface, physically blocking the water flow. This is measured by the Silt Density Index (SDI).
- Scaling: Precipitated mineral salts (calcium, magnesium, and especially silica) crystallize on the membrane surface as the water becomes concentrated, blocking pores and reducing flow.
